Ed Darack's article about the Big Island of Hawaii [Island of Hawaii – Pinnacle of the Pacific, by Ed Darack, May/June 2013 issue] was highly enjoyable, and as a former resident of the islands (Kauai), I wanted to add supplemental information.

All volcanoes, both extinct and active, in the Hawaiian islands lie in the path of the prevailing trade winds, which usually blow 10-20 mph, but can occasionally reach 35 mph.
