Santa Barbara County – The Pacific's Long Reach
Throughout North America, most mountain ranges trend predominantly north-to-south. One of the most notable exceptions to this is the Transverse Ranges, a series of mountains in southern California that strike east-to-west (transverse to the general trend of north-to-south ranges in California). With the exception of its coastal strip, these mountains define all of Santa Barbara County. The east-to-west trending valleys that drop down to the sea allow for cool Pacific air to penetrate much deeper inland than if the mountains ran north-to-south, which would present a wall to wind-driven moisture.
