Utah's Canyon Lands - Under the Press of the Sky

"Wilderness of stone, slickrock wonderland, otherworldly emptiness": Visitors have described the canyon lands of southeastern Utah using all types of ornate and ethereal language upon setting foot here. The landscape is tan, white, yellow, and red stone, with wind-twisted junipers under a cumulus-heavy sky. Visitors wonder about the genesis of the spindly rock arches, the shiny vertical walls streaked blood red, the solitary rock spires, and the hulking buttes and mesas. The modern landscape of the canyon lands features sedimentary rock-sandstone and mudstone-spiked with elements such as iron that add color through oxidation. These forms were sculpted by the area's climate and weather.
