Every avalanche has its own voice, we just can't hear it. At the moment the snowpack fails, and up to 14 seconds before snow begins to slide, an avalanche “whumpfs.” The distinctive sound is inaudible to humans because it's generated in the infrasound spectrum, ranging from 1 to 20 hertz.
