Now that summer is loosening its grip on the United States, our attention turns to the tropics, where deep trade winds begin developing and summertime heating has already warmed ocean waters into the 70s and 80s. Much of the weather in the southeast United States becomes affected by these patterns, and occasionally even makes the news.

TIM VASQUEZ is a former Air Force forecaster and author of Digital Atmosphere, a weather forecasting software program. He lives near Norman, Oklahoma, where he keeps busy as a weather consultant and software developer.
