Cloud Holes: Unraveling an Erstwhile Weather Mystery

Day dawned clear on December 12, 2014, in Boynton Beach, Florida. As the sun rose, the sky turned deep blue. Atmospheric clarity stayed pristine all day, but a strong west wind aloft soon herded flocks of altocumulus cells, ripples, ranks, and rows that kept crossing the sky until after sunset.
