Russ Schneider is the Director of the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). He joined the SPC as the Chief of the Science Support Branch in 1997, and took over the reins in August of 2010, just eight months before the country experienced its worst tornado season in nearly 90 years. April 2011 saw the greatest number of tornadoes in a single month (758) and the greatest daily total (200, on April 27). The Joplin tornado on May 22 was the deadliest single tornado since 1925. The events spurred the national initiative to create a Weather-Ready Nation. As Director of the SPC, Russ Schneider has been at the epi-center of that effort.
