With the May/June issue of Weatherwise comes the arrival of storm season. Muggy, tropical air streams northward from the Gulf of Mexico, meteorologists find themselves lost in thought over the day's sounding charts, while storm chasers are found loading up their vehicles and fanning out across the Great Plains. Early spring is a good time for us to review some of the patterns we see with severe weather. In many of these Forecast Center columns, we've practiced finding fronts and discussed ways to find them. Severe weather forecasting is where this skill pays off.
