A Better Predictor for Roadway De-Icing Needs

Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a new approach for cities to best allocate de-icing resources during major winter storms.

According to lead researcher Olufemi Omitaomu, “Across the United States, cities are collectively spending about $1.5 billion on winter road maintenance.” When cities are hit by multiple major storms in a single season, budgets for treating roads are depleted early on, which can force cities to have to ration resources for later storms, putting drivers at greater risk.
