Most Red Sox fans probably don’t give much thought to the amount of work it takes to care for the field at Fenway Park, but Director of Grounds Dave Mellor can tell you it’s a full-time job. Mellor, who is the author of two books on lawn care, has cared for the fields used by the California Angels, the San Francisco Giants, the Green Bay Packers, and the Milwaukee Brewers. He took some time away from prepping the field for the Red Sox season to talk to Weatherwise about a day in the life of the Red Sox groundskeeper.
Tell us a little bit about what you do.
I oversee anything that is involved with the playing field. So from events to maintenance, whether it’s mowing the grass, watering the clay, re-leveling the clay, patching the mounds, patching up home plate, fixing the wall pad—anything to do with field maintenance and the events that go with it.
